A Court of Wings and Ruin
by Sarah J. Maas
Wow. Wow wow wow wow. For someone who reads the ToG series with minimal investment, I cannot believe how much I love every single one of these characters. At this point, they're my children.
Although smaller than A Court of Mist and Fury, this book definitely packed a strong punch. I was hungry to find out what the last battle would be like, see what happened at the Spring Court, and see Feyre and the Inner Circle defend their homeland from Hybern and the Cauldron. I got all that and more.
Moments That I Loved: (spoilers because this book is quite long and I loved Every Single Event in it):
1.) I loved Feyre's "broken girl" persona at the Spring Court, but it was so nice to get back to the Night Court and see the Inner Circle again. The barter between Armen, Azriel, Mor, Cassian, and Rhys was hysterical as always, and I loved the reunion scene after Feyre came back from the Spring Court! I was cheering the whole time she was reunited, and the best part was the introduction of Lucien to Velaris and the Night Court. I was so happy Feyre and Lucien were back together again!
2.) FEYRE AND IANTHE. The rock! and then the Weaver! oh man. I am so happy that bitch got what she deserved.
3.) I respect that although Tamlin is the literal worst, he did grow somewhat as a character towards the end of the book. I still don't like him, but I can appreciate that he's not so black and white.
4.) The romantic relationships between Cassian and Nesta was amazing. I did not expect to root for them as much as I did! The relationship between Elain, Lucien, and Azriel is going to be interesting in future books.
5.) I definitely think Sarah J. Maas needs to step up her diversity game, but I can appreciate how she wrote Mor's character. I would've liked to see Mor's sexuality explored a little more in the novel, but this is a good step in the right direction.
6.) Armen was iconic during the whole book. Everything she did was perfect and she has never done anything wrong, ever, in her life.
7.) The library was the best part of the Night Court and I'm a little mad we never got to see it earlier. This is a place where women with disabilities can learn and live in peace, protected by a giant monster, and Rhys just?? never mentioned it?? to his mate who loves to read?? Also the fact that they were flirting pretty the whole time and not checking out the wealth of knowledge Rhys must have stored. #Unrealistic and offensive.
8.) The fight scenes were incredible. The Night Court defending Velaris both made me stressed for the characters and forced me to keep reading.
9.) The ending broke my heart. I'm really glad they all ended up happy, but I am surprised no one died or passed away.
10.) My top favorite scene was Azriel teaching Feyre how to fly. We don't often get scenes with Azriel by himself, much less with Feyre, so this was refreshing and comedic.
Overall, there wasn't much that I didn't like. The sex scenes were a bit much, and the word "mate" was thrown around quite often, but honestly I skipped over them and it really didn't hinder my reading experience. Really, the only annoying thing is that Mor, Feyre, Aelin and Manon will never meet in their respective universes (unless SJM decides to make a crossover...which I would not be opposed to).
Some favorite quotes:
“Only you can decide what breaks you, Cursebreaker. Only you.”
“Remember that you are a wolf. And you cannot be caged.”
“When you erupt, girl, make sure it is felt across worlds.”
"I hadn't realized I was a villain in your narrative."
A nightmare, I’d told Tamlin.
I was the nightmare.
“I have no regrets in my life, but this. That we did not have time. That I did not have time with you, Nesta. I will find you in the next world - the next life. And we will have that time. I promise.”
