Bad News
by Edward St. Aubyn
The second in the Patrick Melrose novels finds him in his 20s and going severely off the rails. The beauty of these books is the language and the way that Edward St Aubyn brings the characters and their thoughts and emotions to life. But that doesn't make them easy to read as they cover some pretty grim subject matter. It is two years since I read the first book - Never Mind - and I now wish I'd read them closer together to keep the circumstances of Patrick's childhood more fully in mind before I embarked on this book, and so perhaps if I had it might have made 4 stars instead of two, and it's a book I would recommend.
