I, Fly: The Buzz about Flies and How Awesome They Are by Bridget Heos

3.0

I, Fly explores the life of a housefly from egg to adult fly. Written as narrative nonfiction, the story is told by a fly and includes all of the important information and the gross out facts, as well. It is unusual to find a nonfiction title that will work well as a group read-aloud, but Heos and Plecas have managed to make it happen. The fly is funny, making jokes about the boring butterflies children usually like to study, and the illustrations are brightly colored and include children's faces. All of this will grab the attention of young reader as they follow the plot from beginning to end.
There are many topics that can be explored based on this book. Readers can compare and contrast the housefly and the butterfly. They can study insects, germs, life cycles, ecosystems, and blow fly use in solving crimes. I am sure librarians and teachers can think of even more uses for this book.
I, Fly, has a niche. Narrative nonfiction titles examining flies are hard to find. It is worth the purchase.
