The narrator’s voice feels so original and authentic; he’s a character I will always remember. This tale of overcoming adversity (foster care, addiction) in rural Virginia was beautifully executed. Heartbreaking at times, but not gratuitously traumatic as some critics have said. There is significant character growth and a beautiful respect for Appalachian history and culture.
Graphic: Addiction, Drug abuse
Moderate: Child abuse
