Anne of the Island
by L.M. Montgomery
I absolutely adored this book! It’s a classic for a reason. This is probably my favorite book in the series. Ah, Gilbert! Just when I thought I couldn’t love you even more…
In this book, we finally get the romance between Anne and Gilbert that has been building since the first two books. Anne really grows and matures in this story and finally realizes that all the things she’s been wanting in a suitor were really not what will ultimately make her happy.
Along with Anne’s growing realization of her love for Gilbert, we meet some new characters and become even more enamored with previous characters. Phil is a fun new addition. I enjoyed her struggle to pick between suitors. The man she finally decides to marry is so different from those she dated before. I also adored reading Davy’s funny commentary again. He’s definitely a new favorite. There were some surprisingly sad moments that I was not expecting which differ from the 1985 miniseries I’m so familiar with. It made the story even more poignant.
Anne and Gilbert are just pure enjoyment. Gilbert has to be one of the swooniest heroes of all time. It was so good to see Anne jealous. I also loved the events surrounding her first published story. The various marriage proposals Anne receives from a few suitors are downright hilarious.
Highly recommend the audiobook version! The narrator was fabulous. She captures each character so well. Those funny lines from Davy and other characters were expertly delivered and made for such an enjoyable listen. Can’t wait to continue on with the next books in the series!
