Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
4.0

Franzen's writing to me is all about the characters. Though the stories move along nicely, the action is secondary. What I like most about his characters is the fact that their actions are always true to who they are. Franzen does not avoid representing their foibles and flaws. At times I found myself saying, "Oh god, why is he doing that?!" But despite my reproach, the action is always perfectly in line with the person he's created. This, to me, makes them all the more enjoyable, as I don't ever feel that they are being compromised in order to please the reader.
