docfaustus 's review for:
The Good Soldier Svejk and His Fortunes in the World War
by Jaroslav Hašek
A bit tough to review, as I'm not sure we can easily untangle "Funny stories about loveable doofus Shweik" from "Hasek's commentary on WWI and the Austro-Hungarian Empire".
The stories are funny, but probably not enough so that I would recommend them to just anyone.
Hasek inveighing against Germans, and Austrins, and Magyars, and, well, anyone not Czech is interesting in its own right, but I can't imagine it's terribly interesting to most people.
At any rate, it was a fun read! But I don't think I'm likely to read it again, or recommend it to someone unless there's some other connecting thread to make me think they'd be especially interested.
