The Inner Game of Tennis: The Classic Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance
by W. Timothy Gallwey
Some good ideas shared in a 134-page book that is about 60 pages too long. I found it rather repetitive, with dragged out explanations and examples. There is also some outdated language surrounding women: in one example, the author starts a story by introducing "a very cheery and attractive housewife". What is the purpose of sharing with us that she is attractive? While it seems to have made an impression on the author, it makes no difference to the story or the lesson imparted. In another example, he talks about three men in a car stopped at a red light watching a woman who is completely naked walk across the street, and then proceeds to describe what each man might be thinking. Perhaps the next edition can get rid of these icky parts and focus at the task at hand in a non-gendered way.
And while they're at it, slim down the book.
