Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton

3.0

Many reviewers are praising Bolton for a masterful new work that seems to defy the genre's expectations and keeps readers on their toes. I, however, did not get that impression. The book begins with a hot air balloon trip that ends in disaster. I thought Bolton spent far too long on this trip, highlighting certain characteristics and elements that mattered very little. Perhaps that time could have been better spent providing a different motive for the crime this book centers upon--I won't reveal what the criminals here are engaging in, but it's rather similar to one of Bolton's Lacey Flint stories. Finally, the supposed plot twist that will leave you gasping? It seemed rather evident halfway through the book--at least, for anyone that's trying to solve the mystery rather than simply be immersed in the story. Bolton does write fairly well; she can keep the reader engaged and I will certainly not refuse to read her other books. I just didn't think there was anything new, or even all that suspenseful, in this one.
