Good Material
by Dolly Alderton
Taking a page from the Nick Hornby book of insufferable male protagonists, Good Material brings us Andy. While a flawed character who demonstrates growth is a worthwhile story, Andy is fundamentally unlikeable and listening to his whining, crap banter and self pitying reflections were grating. While reading this I spent a lot of time “hanging out” with someone I didn’t like, and all I wanted to do was grab a wine with Jen and gossip about this wanker.
This strong emotional response (hate) from me deserves a couple of stars. The book was realistic and well written aside from the fact it was a first person narrative and that “first person” was Andy.
