This is the first book I have ever read by Sam Hall, she's not someone I know, so reading this co-authored book with her and L.V Lane was something I was looking forward to.
As you all know if you read any of my other reviews on L.V. Lane she is a huge favourite of mine, so maybe I set the bar a little too high with this book? I'm not sure. What I do know is that I sadly didn't connect with this book in the same way that I normally do with an L.V. Lane book.
The blurb for the book is very good, and it really piqued my interest, but when I journeyed into the pages of the book - I was left with many questions for which I could find no answer (at least not yet, but I really am not a fan of not getting any hints about things in a first book even if we learn more about the world in a "next" book).
This is an Omegaverse M/F book, and for that category, it did tick all my boxes. I love dystopian books, but I struggled to connect with our main couple. I struggled to really remember what I had read....which is extremely unusual when I have read an L.V. Lane book.
I can't say if this reason is the co-authorship, there's no way to tell who wrote what in that setup, I can only be honest and say that I was left wanting, and that saddens me because I don't like leaving reviews like this.
There were just too many questions I felt were unanswered, and I felt like the "red thread" of the book got a bit lost. Almost like everything was juuust out of reach and I felt like the writing was a bit too superficial, it just didn't connect as well as it could and I struggled with not knowing what the actual world looked like:
Where are we?
What happened to make the world how it is?
How do you fit "all Alphas" in one compound? A compound inside a city, but when described from Jace - it sounds more like a city within a city, a derelict city - but a city.
Who/What is funding The Outfit?
The world-building in the book was not at all on par with what I am used to reading by L.V.Lane because that is one of the things she's always been so strong in, I've always connected and never felt like I had unanswered questions at the end of the book. Especially not a book that has a HEA and no cliffhanger.
Despite my troubles with this book, I am willing to give book 2 a shot as I am not a fan of shutting down a series based on just one book. I have read several series where I have favourite books inside that series that I could re-read again and again, just as I have books in that same series I really don't connect with and only read once.
I have given this book 3*, there just wasn't enough here for me to give it a 4 sadly.
