Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross

3.75

Okay so I really like the side characters, like the little glimpses of Attie and Tobias for example are really cute. And I appreciated some of the development we got of the Atwood family, and even the development of Mr Kitt.

We got a bit more fantasy plot in this book but it kind of felt like it was to the detriment of the romance and I gravely missed the Iris/Roman interactions and their frequent beautifully typed letters to each other. But of course I adored the moments between them that we did get.

I definitely enjoyed Roman’s character journey more than Iris’ and thought Roman had a top notch monologue delivery to Dacre towards the end of the book.

The pacing for me felt really off from about a third of the way through. It was either way too slow, like to the point where I could only read small increments at a time before I had to just put this book down. Or it was far too rushed with way too much crammed in toward the end and not enough time spent on each component.

I disconnected with some of the plot points in this book, like Iris, Attie and Sarah pulling off a museum heist with no consequences. And Iris just casually being the person who slays Dacre with zero combat training. That entire fight and assassination all kind of felt a bit anticlimactic?

I still appreciated a lot of the war imagery and this felt quite powerfully done. I really liked the section of short extracts we got from multiple character perspectives as the bombs hit. And the execution line up was an impactful and horrifying scene however short and again rushed lol.

I’m pleased Rebecca Ross actually killed off Forest and Sarah, this felt like a necessary and right plot point to occur. But whilst I appreciated this was sad, it didn’t like emotionally resonate with me?

I did like the ending with Roman and Iris’ lil typed exchanges in their townhouse v much tho ❤️ and the little nod that Attie was starring in a concert.

Despite my criticisms, I generally enjoyed this read, and there were some v beaut moments and quotes of note, albeit not as many as I’d have liked!
