Ayoade on Top by Richard Ayoade

funny lighthearted relaxing fast-paced

3.5

Without a doubt the best of the Ayoade literary canon.

Coming to this off the back of Ayoade on Ayoade and the Grip of Film, I was man who was bewildered, concerned, and undeniably curious. Where could Ayoade possible go next?

The answer: simply take one of the worst films ever made and analyse it as if it were Citizen Kane.

This is truly a wonderful piece of satire, with Ayoade leaning into the analysis so well that I had to continually remind myself that the film in question is considered to be an awful mess, even by it's cast. I must note that I hadn't watched View From the Top prior to reading this and I think it may have worked effortlessly in the book's favour. It's far easier to lose yourself in Ayoade's analysis when you have no prior image of what it really is he's referring to.

Very well executed. A fun, light-hearted solo read but most definitely an excellent way to close off my time with Ayoade.
