Mercy by Julie Garwood
3.0

I had heard, 'If you like Nora Roberts, you will probably enjoy Julie Garwood.' That meant trying one of her books was a pretty safe bet. Where Roberts stand alone books are mystery/ suspense with a little romance thrown in, Garwood is a romance with a little mystery (not so much suspense) thrown in. It was actually more romance than I enjoy.

The background story was given in the opening chapters for the protagonist. Unfortunately, you never really saw the character traits of the child in the adult. I think it was designed more to highlight the family ethics which are consistent throughout the story. Michelle's character, Mike as she's known to friends and family, had so much potential but ended up more of the damsel in distress trope. She does redeem herself towards the end of the book.

The hero? What the author tries to convey as confidence comes off as arrogant and cocky. Yes, he's the good guy. Yes, he's incredibly handsome. However, I thought his character was predictable and lacked much depth.

There were a couple of unexpected twists in the story which is why I rated it three stars.
