The Stranger by Albert Camus

4.0

I loved the way this was written. I don't mean that it was written in amazing or shockingly new way that is just so brilliant you wonder why not write all books this way. This was written in a way you would see a cliché Paris movie directed, or Italian, or Belgian movie, through the eyes of a Hollywood director. I can just imagine the set, the footpath, the lampposts, the styling of the characters, the leaning through the window part, the swim and walk on the beach. The part where the murder happens, the tunes change, I can see that directed in a way so similar to Lolita. ( I'm thinking the thinking of this man, his disbelief in any god, his soullessness, is as preposterous to people as Lolita, since you know, Lolita is banned in so many countries and this is literally about a murderer. )
Is it weird that I kind of saw the point in some of the things the narrator was saying or feeling? Or is it just because I am part of the generation that has been desensitized by the social media and news? Anyway, the point is, I saw his point. But then it just became ridiculous at some point. Like come-on. How can you say that you don't know if your girlfriend is dead or alive and if she is dead than you can't really spare your thoughts on a dead person? But who knows what kind of thoughts go through your head when you are about to be facing the guillotine.
One thing I can successfully say is that if this was supposed to be deep and contain a really strong meaning behind it, I didn't get it. I also did not get the ending. Like, what happened? Maybe it's because I just read 1984 a few weeks ago, the ending seemed similar to the climax of 1984. I didn't mind it. I like that I can say I have read another classic. It didn't bore me. I loved the writing, it flowed smoothly. No nonsense, no rambling. Absolutely loved some of the descriptions of summer and beach. I thought some of the 'unique' remarks, observations and opinions of the narrator were extremely witty, maybe because they were so ridiculous but seemed to make sense.
Would love to reread it later on in life. Nice one. Definitely recommend.
