The City We Became
by N.K. Jemisin
The dedication to New York as a living, breathing city was incredible; I've rarely felt as grounded in a setting. The writing was beautiful and meaningful as one expects from Jemisin, and the characters felt nuanced and interesting. Most impressive to me was the critique of Lovecraftian horror and Lovecraft himself.
What was lacking for me was the plot. There was a lot of slow build in Acts 1 and 2, which left Act 3 feeling rushed and abruptly over when it finally appeared. Likewise, we got a lot of the villain, who was extremely interesting, in the first two acts, but very little of her in the third. I would've liked to see more of her in those final pages, and a little more of each borough's unique contributions to the climax against her.
Overall, there was a lot to love here, and I'm interested to see where the series goes.
