I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella

Rating: 2/5

Plot: After Fixie’s father passes, Fixie works tirelessly to keep her family store alive and in-tack even though her mother, brother, and sister (who are all wild characters) have different visions of what the future of the store will be. Through a crazy encounter, Fixie saves a laptop of a rich investment manager Seb, who writes her an IOU as a thank you. I won’t spoil what she uses this IOU on, but it’s probably not what you think.

My thoughts: I had heard a lot about Sophie Kinsella and so I was really excited about reading her books, but I found this one to be a little lackluster. It had a recipe of a good story, with a hardworking woman, strong family roots, an uncanny encounter with a handsome man, and a lot of fun run-ins between the two. But instead, I thought this story made Fixie seem weak when it came to standing up for herself to her family and the men in her life. She lets Ryan walk all over her, Seb treats her poorly, and frankly, I kind of feel like she gets what she deserves. I don’t think there was enough development in the relationships or her as a person. I will give Sophie Kinsella another chance because I do think this was just the wrong book to start with.

If you’ve read any of her books, which would you recommend?
