Between Stairs and Stardust by Pepper Basham

5.0

On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Between Stairs and Stardust by Pepper Basham is a lemon creme puff. With a sweet zing of flavor and light airiness, one lemon creme puff will not be enough.

Stella, a painter and illustrator, returns to the Biltmore and Blue Ridge Mountains to hide away while her reputation is cleared from a scandal in Boston. She meets James and his young sister one afternoon in the gardens, and a friendship based on sharing the story of Cinderella blooms.

What a delightful retelling of the fairytale of Cinderella set up in the historical setting of the stunning Biltmore in North Carolina! With a soft spot for fairytales, history, and romance, I loved every part of this story. Best of all, I enjoyed character interactions that acknowledged that making assumptions aren't always the best move. Too many stories fall into that easy storyline where a character stupidly believes something false, and Stella and James refreshingly steered clear of those opportunities.
