KIM JIYOUNG, BORN 1982 by CHO NAM-JOO

Kim Jiyoung is statistically very normal. She grows up in a household with a sister and a brother and her mother and father. She does relatively well at school and relatively well at university. She has boyfriends, but nothing earth shattering. She gets a decent job, gets married, has a baby.

What is also statistically very normal about this book is the way women are treated in all of these institutions. Women are expected to give up the most, to put up with sexual advances and ‘jokes’, to make coffee for their male coworkers and to earn less than them as well.

To prove how statistically normal the sexism is, the writer provides us with references to research studies.

Kim Jiyoung is every woman. And it is not good enough. This book is for anyone who has ever wondered why there are still feminists in this world when women have equal rights to men now. This book is for anyone who has ever said, ‘I am a feminist but I wish she wouldn’t ram it down our throats’. This book is for anyone who says, ‘women are just biologically suited to being housewives.’

Read this book and educate yourself.
