Supernatural: John Winchester's Journal
by Alex Irvine
This has been an interesting inside look into the mind of John Winchester. Interestingly enough, the narrative starts with the accounting of several days per year, but by the end of the book, it seems that the only days important for John are his wedding day, the day Mary died, and his boys' birthdays.

I liked how Irvine simulated a broken style for the narrative and how the evolution of Winchester's character from a naive man to a hunter is clear in how he expresses himself. It is also heartbreaking how he sees himself and how he loses himself.
Interspersed with the journal entries, there are passages devoted to mythology, and all kinds of supernatural stuff. You can find lists of different accounts of the myth of the vampire, to a 4-page Latin exorcism that nobody can read.

This book finishes right when the TV shows starts. There are some inconsistencies with what the show says at some point, but in general lines, the book makes references to a lot of things that happened in the first seasons. I wouldn't say that this is must-have book for fans of the show, but it has very interesting information, specially on Sam and Dean's childhood and how they seemed to deal with their upbringing. Which in the case of Sammy, well... it didn't go very well.
After reading this book, you get why Dean places so much importance on family.
