This reminded me while Peter F. Hamilton is one of my favorite authors when it comes to worldbuilding. I initially worried this book was going to be a retread of the Commonwealth Saga and the Void Trilogy, but this was a wholly original setting and writing was even better than in those series, no doubt because Hamilton's prose and dialogue has improved over time. The narrative reminded me of a science fictional version of the Canterbury Tales, similar to Hyperion. Both end on a cliffhanger though, so be prepared for that.
