Better Off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg
3.0

This one teeters between 2.5 and 3 stars for me. It's a classic best friends growing up to realize they love each other but have to get through obstacles first before they get there.
It was cute. That's basically how I can honestly describe this book. It went back and forth between Macallan and Levi so we got to read the story in each voice. The one thing I liked is that the writing matured as it went on because it started off with the characters in seventh grade and ended in eleventh. You could clearly see the growth. The climax was a bit disconcerting because it switched off with like every other line and paragraph. The only way to tell was the difference in font.
The book left me wanting more. There was this constant buildup to their growing friendship and them trying to sort out their feelings. Then by the time you get to that point, it sort of plateaus. It leaves you wanting more. I kind of hate when books end right as the characters get together. What happens AFTER? Give me more of that. That's what makes the friends to lovers trope so good. Not just the confession but the transition as well.
Also, between the chapters, there was back and forth banter between the characters like they were text messages. It was cute for the first few chapters but then it left me wondering what the significance was since they did it after EVERY chapter. Were they writing this story down for the reader? Were they reflecting on memories? Was it just for them or was it for us? It was never explained and that part really would have worked better in some television series. Oh well
In the end, I liked it but I wanted more. Friends to lovers is a weakness of mine and this one was just average.
