How We Fall Apart by Katie Zhao

4.0

How We Fall Apart follows a group of students at one of the most prestigious private high schools, all with secrets. And when the most popular girl in school ends up dead, their secrets will look like they had motive to kill. Can they find the person who has uncovered their secrets and put suspicion on them? Or will the mystery leak get away with more than just anonymous posts?

There were elements that I liked and wasn't such a big fan of in this book. It was nice to see that the two kids attending the school on scholarship were more or less accepted by their peers instead of being exiled, which is what you hope to read about but usually are given the "I am better than thou" mentality. Nancy always felt like an odd duck because she was there on scholarship and felt like people judged her for it, which was valid, but it was nice to see she had a group of friends. I also liked the flashbacks to help the story come together, and the mysterious "Incident" that was hanging over all of their heads throughout the story. I'm always up for reading a whodunnit story.

There were a few things that felt unreal or overlooked to me in this story. With the Proctor always hanging over their heads and clearly the faculty, principal, and all the students knew about Tip Tap and what was being said, why wasn't there more of a police investigation for what happened to Jamie? At least the police talking to her "closest" friends to get information since they were all in the same place when she died. I also kind of felt like this followed "One of Us is Lying" with the gossip app, but I guess that is the kind of world we live in now where there are more of these around and maybe shouldn't seem out of the ordinary.

I enjoyed reading How We Fall Apart and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a YA mystery with a school setting.
