Lots of content warnings, but I think the tone and presentation of the book makes this clear right away, and no pain is glorified.

A lot of potential faults of the book (e.g., the stories of the women are very similar) also work to its advantage (e.g., helps you track changes over time and the characters feel connected to their ancestors). The concern for misandry is unfounded I think; even a good man with his whole life cannot undo the harm that one awful man can do in an instant.

Not all women have magical nature protectors, but hey isn’t this also a metaphor? Isn’t it incredible to see how women can help protect each other when they’re vulnerable? And how we can help future women have a more painless and fair life than our own? And how we can teach future men to protect and not harm, breaking generational curses of hate? Isn’t that real AND magical?

So yeah. Don’t trust a man who blames you for his being attracted to you. Don’t trust a man who separates you from others or from knowledge.
