If you love cats, you will fall in love with Dewey, and you will love reading about him. He story is touching and often humorous. You will not be disappointed there.

However, if you're just looking for an uplifting story about a cat with a big heart who wins the love of an entire town (and many tourists as well), your eyes might glaze over during some chapters. She goes into a LOT of detail about the history of the area and about her own life story and family history, much of which is the complete opposite of uplifting. There are entire chapters that don't even mention Dewey. To some readers, diving into the area's history and the author's personal life might make the story richer and give it more meaning, while to others, it will just be a big distraction from the main event: Dewey!

A word to the wise: if you are someone who gets really upset when horrible things happen to cats, you might be better off skipping the chapter "Memories of Mom." There is nothing about Dewey in the chapter, and what happens to Vicki's parents' cat (and the complete lack of consequences for the perpetrator) will make your blood boil. I read that chapter on my lunch break and was so upset I could hardly focus at work all afternoon.
