Most Likely by Sarah Watson

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through a Goodreads giveaway.

This book is about four best friends: Ava, Jordan, CJ, and Martha. All we know from the start is that one of them will eventually become the first female president and will have the last name Diffenderfer, but we don't know which character that will be until the end.

Although it's an extremely minor part of the story - literally just a few pages at the beginning and end of the book - the addition of one of the girls becoming president is what elevates this book from being an unremarkable standard YA contemporary story to being actually interesting. I wasn't particularly invested in any of their teen drama, but I loved looking for clues about what the future held for each character.

I have two complaints with this book. One is that the girls didn't seem evenly fleshed out. Despite being told in different perspectives, the first half of the book felt very Jordan centered while the second half was primarily about Ava. It took me a significant portion of the book to be able to differentiate between CJ and Martha. CJ's story got interesting about halfway through, but poor Martha felt more like a background character.

My other complaint is with Logan Diffenderfer. I feel like he was basically forced into each girl's storyline in order to keep us guessing about who would end up as president. As a result, a story celebrating women and friendship instead became about a guy. And not even a great guy!

I did enjoy this story overall. There were spots where it didn't keep my interest, but the changing narration meant that the focus of the story was never in one place for long, so I liked that. If you're looking for a YA contemporary with a slight twist, I definitely recommend Most Likely.
