Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
5.0

Yasssss, now THIS is what I was was looking for this October!
Honestly I don't read a lot of horror, because horror in written form isn't scary to me (its the visual element of horror movies that really gets me). But of the horror I have read, this is now my favorite!
“Girls hunger. And we’re taught, from the moment our brains can take it, that there isn’t enough food for us all.”

This is a demon/monster type horror, and my take is that this demon is a personification of misogyny/the patriarchy. And the Mortimer women represent those women who give up their freedom to the patriarchy in exchange for what they think is a comfortable life. But in the end it rots them from the inside (in this case literally).

There's also an ancient secret society of "knights" (men who think too highly of themselves) who have battled demons over the centuries. And always at the center of all the chaos is three young, magical, powerful girls. These forces try to pit the girls against each other as competition (just as society does in reality) and to sacrifice themselves for "the greater good".

This book takes the "girl-on-girl hate"/"I'm different from other girls" tropes and turns them on their head, smashing them into pieces!
That's why I loved it so much. This book is really about the love and friendship between women -- powerful enough to slay demons!
