Jay's Journal by Beatrice Sparks
1.0
I've read several of Beatrice Sparks' books, and while they are all pretty corny and unrealistic, this one is by far the worst. To be honest, I've enjoyed her other books to an extent, even though they're all a bit cringe-y... but this one was just BAD.
It made no sense.
It was incredibly fake and unbelievable.
It was also confusing... there would be mentions of characters or situations that were totally random, yet it seemed like we were already supposed to know about them?! Lots of WTF moments for me while reading, as a result.
Anyway, I'm working my way through all of her books and must say how obvious it is that these were all written by the same person. I know it's basically been debunked that these were actual diaries, and we all know she wrote these even though she claimed not to have at the time, but it's laughable because the voice is exactly the same in every one of her books. I can't believe that at one time, anyone actually thought these were genuine diaries and NOT written by the same person. Her characters are all the same, sound the same, speak the same, etc. What a whole mess. Yikes.
Onto the next one! These books are all trainwrecks, yet I can't look away!
Sidenote: I do know that this particular "journal" was based on an actual kid and that she had access to his real journal(s). However, only several of his real entries made it into this book and she fabricated the majority of it, which ended up harming his family in the process. That story is probably more fascinating than the actual book is. His brother wrote a book about the experience, but it is near impossible to track down. I'd love to read it though!
