“Fear is a phoenix. You can watch it burn a thousand times and still it will return.”
“I would have come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting.”
“We meet fear. We greet the unexpected visitor and listen to what he has to tell us. When fear arrives, something is about to happen.”
What a great conclusion to do this duology! I'm so glad I joined a buddy read for Six of Crows. I've wanted to explore the Grishaverse for so long and the buddy read was a great excuse to jump back in. And boy, neither one of the books in this duology disappointed.
The characters were oh, so flawed but entirely lovable. I don't know if I'll forgive Bardugo for what she did to them. iykyk. The atmosphere was tense and chaotic in all of the best ways. Bardugo's writing just kept me turning the page!
The one thing that I didn't hold up as well in this book compared to the first was the pacing. The first book's pacing was really cohesive. The heist was epic. However, I saw another reviewer describe the first half of this book as multiple side quests and that comparison rang so true to me. 😂 The first half of the book definitely suffered a little bit from wrapping up book one but she really pulled it together by the middle and the story had me in a chokehold until it was finished!
