The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
4.0

If you like reading beautiful language, you probably won't love Hemingway; a fact I knew, but I didn't totally grasp until I read this.

I guess I love romanticism and poetic prose too much. Hemingway's concise "Iceberg Theory" writing style left me wanting more throughout the book. This isn't necessarily a criticism, just a preference. Know thyself!

The Sun Also Rises, thematically, was a nail hit on the head for me. I have made notes that it would be interesting to review all the passages where Jake discusses tipping and emptiness of it the character's actions, specifically in Part 3. I felt like Part 3 just demonstrated how they tried to escape and yet when they are finished, it's all the same and no progress has been made.

Also, a comment on the sole female main character: she was written so one-dimensionally I can't think of a way to excuse it. Brett has misogyny written all over her.

Takeaway: do you like sad novels that are sad not in tragedy but almost in pathetic-ness? This is for you. Especially if you like the "Iceberg Theory" writing style.

& A Warning: one of the characters gets picked on for being Jewish like, the whole novel. And there's some blatant racist trash in there. Head's up.
