Early Riser
by Jasper Fforde
In the acknowledgements at the end of the book Fforde apologizes for not having written any books in what seems like forever. But if a nice long nap gets us wild new ideas like this one, I'm absolutely okay with it. I love a first-in-a-series book from Fforde because his world-building is so detailed, complex, and bonkers and it's fun to just hop aboard that trolley and hold on for dear life when you know that by the end it'll all start to make its own special kind of sense. I liked this one especially for its take on the idea of dreams, climate change, and just what it would be like if humans had to hibernate (seriously, the detail here is amazing). I'm still holding out for Shades of Grey 2, but, you know, this was an exciting detour!
