This is now one of my favorite books.
This book certainly leans more into a romance body horror creature feature than anything else. I picked this up because I wanted something messed up and gruesome and instead got such a beautiful story on loss and grief that I couldn't put it down.
I feel this book is relevant to the times and should be read by anyone at least once. Their main take aways from the book is "The rich get away with everything while stepping on the poor. Eat the rich, kill the rich!!" While the main theme still remains "Keep your loved ones close. Tell them you love them no matter what." The heavy theme of love is what made me fall so hard for this book.
It would get 5 stars BUT the creature disguising itself as a younger version of the main character to get gangbanged by the construction crew so it could seduce and murder was too much. We got that but not the sensual scene of her falling in love with this creature taking on the form of her husband? They skipped THAT sex scene? Crazy.
Despite it all, this book held humor and relevancy more than it did horror. It was generous with it's atmosphere and has characters I found gorgeously written. I loved every moment of it. If you go into this expecting horror, you will be disappointed, honestly. I waited for it to get into horror and instead it U-turned into a beauty and the beast like love story between an 80 year old woman and the ghost of her husband disguised as an odd goopy shapeshifting sea creature < 3
I also loved the gay propaganda of having a pug lmfao.
