Sleeping Beauties by Owen King, Stephen King
4.0

"Sleeping Beauties" was, to me, the most pleasant Stephen King book I've read in a long, long time. My biggest qualm with his work is that his novels typically fizzle out halfway through. That fizzling out often leads to boring or unsatisfying endings, which makes the whole act of reading a Stephen King novel feel worthless. "Sleeping Beauties," however, was a joy to read through and through.

In short: "Sleeping Beauties" is about an outbreak of a disease that causes sleeping women to develop cocoon-like substance over their bodies that pushes them into an unwakeable sleep. The results of this outbreak leave the men of the town - ranging from disgustingly sexist to mildly tolerable - to pick up the pieces.

The two King's seamlessly integrate and interweave fantasy and reality, so much so that this little town of Dooling could very well exist. The father and son duo offer such a keen critique of the spectrum of masculinity that is desperately needed in this current social/cultural/political landscape. Given that many of Stephen King's readers are male, hopefully, this novel forces them to re-evaluate their behaviors and redefine masculinity to fit within a modern context.

I found the characters to be achingly human - each so deeply flawed but redeemable to a point. The plot was fast moving, even within 700 pages, and the King's truly kept you engaged and on your toes.

I couldn't recommend this book enough. If you want to embark on a true journey - as all of Stephen King's books are a triumph - I highly, highly recommend you pick up this book ASAP.
