Romantic and sexy in the way that historical fiction often is, with a relatively good (not necessarily totally truthful) representation of a black woman's experience in the South after the Civil War.

While very romanticised, it's still really nice to see a thriving black woman in this period who still faces discrimination and fear that would be expected. Wealth and education is her protection, along with wealthy friends, and she wants to pass it on for the community. Drake is dashing, adventurous, and very very rougeish that it's hard to not fall into his charms.

The men we're supposed to root for are ridiculously forward thinking, but again this is more of a fantastic romance than an academic history work.
