Everyone Knows But You: A Tale of Murder on the Maine Coast by Thomas E. Ricks

2.0

Definitely had me thinking of Maine and the summer road trips we took over the span of about four or five years back in the 1980s and 90s. From an off-islander point of view it seemed like Thomas Ricks got the taste of Maine's outer islands just right, not surprising given he lives part of the year in Texas and the other part in Maine. By the way, you can watch Ricks talk about the book in this Politics and Prose talk in June of this year.

I enjoyed the writing, it mimicked the pace of life on Liberty Island. The characters were interesting but not quite as complicated as Ryan Tapia assesses. Tapia, the FBI agent recently posted (at his request) to the outpost of Maine, is faced with his first task, that of solving who killed a rather detested fisherman.

I didn't find this so much a mystery (having figured out 'who done it' fairly quickly) as a study of people in a particular place. Tapia is in Maine because he fled California after his wife, children and dog were killed in a car accident. The people of Liberty Island live by their own code of life and outsiders are not welcome. Mix the grieving outsider and the insular islanders, plus a cast of helpful folks off island, and the result is a fairly quick read. With that said, I won't be surprised if Ryan Tapia returns for another story…
