WOW. This is one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. I had seen the movie adaptation back when it first came out in theatres and didn’t remember much about it. The audiobook was excellent!

1878- Two stage magicians come up together, learning their craft. But an incident occurs and the two become rivals, completely obsessed with each other’s ruin.

This book is told in journal entries from both magicians’ POV. This structure was compelling and worked so well. Spanning decades and generations, seeing the consequences of these men’s actions was fascinating. I loved the pacing and the narration. I watched the film after finishing the audiobook (which is also incredible) but very different! So many things were changed for the screen but completely worked and stayed in the realm of Priest’s characters. Highly recommend both but don’t discount the book’s plot twists if you’ve seen the movie as so much was modified!
