The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt
3.0

This book was ok. Not the greatest book I have read, but nothing wrong with it either. It is a good coming of age story about a 7th grader in 1968. I liked the structure of the book - one month/one Shakespeare play for each chapter. I'm not sure if it is the time period or not, but I don't know if I believe that a 7th grade boy would be that interested in Shakespeare or understand them quite as well as Holling does in the book. He memorizes complete passages out of numerous plays...not sure that is realistic. I did enjoy the "war" between Holling and Mrs. Baker though. I thought that was fun and really showed good writing and character development on both their parts. Not sure if Mrs. Baker really hated Holling at the beginning but she definitely became his champion at the end and this book showed her as a wonderful teacher. I am sure teachers love this book, but I am not sure kids will.
