What Girls Are Made Of by Elana K. Arnold

3.0

A coming-of-age story about Nina who tries to figure out what makes one worthy of love after breaking up with her boyfriend at 16 years old. As she does this, she thinks about her parent's relationship, a trip she took with her mother to Italy where she learned about and saw statues of tortured saints, and what dogs are getting adopted at the shelter where she volunteers.

Lately, whenever I read a YA book, I start to think that maybe I am finally feeling like an adult (only took 40+ years) because I have a hard time identifying with the teenage main character and the immature language and actions of the characters annoy me. That being said, I wish I had read a book like this when I was a teenager even though I don't think I would have appreciated its message at that time. Important topics and commentary on how women are taught to view their own worth, but the writing just didn't cut it for me. 3.5 stars.
