I chose to read this shortly after the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene on the Appalachian mountains. It was a comfort in a time of such devastation, reminding me of the millions of little lives and souls still living and the communities and ecosystems that will continue to adapt and flourish. The illustrations were stunning and beautifully accurate, with short easily-digestible informative blurbs to accompany each species.
The author's narration of her journey spoke to the transitions of life, reflected on aging, priorities, and communities, and above all, encouraged every reader to get outside and simply experience the world in all its micro majesty. As a disabled housebound reader with a past in wildlife rehabilitation and environmental work, this book reminded me I don't *have* to seek out an accessible location to try to experience the world - there is still plenty to experience and adore right outside my front door.
