Counting Thyme
by Melanie Conklin
Thyme's family is forced to pack up and move from San Diego to New York City for a new experimental cancer treatment for her little brother. She thinks it's temporary; they'll be gone a couple months, tops, and then Val will be better and they will move back home. As time goes on, though, she senses that this isn't the case. What's more important, being back with her best friend in California, or being with her family as her brother fights for his life?

I liked this book. I did. However, it didn't really stand out to me in a crowded middle grades field of family tragedy stories. It's a solid read and I think my students will enjoy it.
