As She Ascends by Jodi Meadows

3.0

After escaping the Pit, a place her parents sent her for defending dragons, Mira is on the run demanding answers. She wants to know where the dragons have been taken and the history behind the Mira Treaty, a Treaty that she’s been defending her whole life and the one she’s named after. In order to gain this information, she must go back home to the people who betrayed her. As she learns more, her connection to the dragons grows stronger and with that comes the fear that she might lose control. After the first novel being a bit of a dud to the trilogy, this one surprisingly didn’t fall victim to second book syndrome and had some substance to it. The reader was taken aback to find it was fast-paced and that things were happening. In the first novel, for a trilogy about dragons, it felt like the dragons were missing. In this one, we saw the dragons and they were a part of the plot. It felt like things kept happening so that really helped move the novel along. Now, the reader is curious how it’s all going to end, will they be able to save the dragons or not. What the reader didn’t exactly care for, or about, were the characters. We have quite a few of them and the reader just had a hard time connecting, or wanting to connect to them because they really had nothing memorable to them. They all felt a bit two dimensional, flat or clichéd. The way the main character’s parents basically hated her, just felt so over played and over done that it just read as boring. There was a romance plotline between two of the main characters and the reader felt nothing for it; if anything, they wanted to skip all of it and get back to the action and the dragons. The reader liked that those two characters knew each other for a long time and we got to see their relationship grow stronger over time, but the romance of it all didn’t do anything for this reader. In the end though, this was a better novel than the first, but we still want to see more dragon action; less people drama and more dragon drama.
