The Thousand Names
by Django Wexler
That was AMAZING.

Everything in it was great : characters, plot, atmosphere, dialogues, verisimilitude... One minor drawback was that I felt like the plot dragged a bit in the middle, but that might just be because a workweek-from-hell prevented me from giving it the attention it deserved. I still order book two around 40% of the book, and that tells you everything.
After the amazing Powder Mage and City of Stairs trilogies, my opinion leans even more firmly in the direction of flintlock-fantasy-is-the-future.
Big, big bonus points for having no less than four major female characters in a military fantasy setting without shoehorning any of them (pun intended), quality bi/lesbian representation and, I think, the only nonsexual depiction of a naked woman I've ever read in a fantasy book.

Even more gold stars for Janus Vhalnich, who reminded me of a weird mix of Sherlock Holmes, Thomas Shelby and George Smiley in the best and most captivating ways.

Added cookies points for Django Wexler's name : is that just a pseudonym ? Is it reality ? I don't care, but I dig it.

Thank you for everything.
Five sun-faded-blue, gunpowder smoke and glittering heavy-bronze stars.
