Odd One Out by Nic Stone
2.0

I normally enjoy Nic Stone’s novels but this might be one of the few that I didn’t feel ok with. Even with the author’s note explaining why she wrote this - it still didn’t excuse the way the characters ultimately were written.
You have Coop - the black male main character who has been in love with his best friend (who’s a girl) for a long time. Yet - he’s known for a while she identifies as a lesbian. But his internal monologue is so disrespectful when he even catches a glimpse at her. Like why are we objectifying her?!
Rae is the new girl but I don’t feel like we enough from her to get a sense of who she is minus her love for slightly nerdy niches and her feelings of abandonment from her mom and sister. We think she likes Jupiter but maybe like Coop too?
Then we get Jupiter - someone who initially identifies as a lesbian but isn’t 100% sure
My issues mainly stem from one side character claiming that bi girls are going to leave you for a dude  & the dismissal of feeling something for trans /non-binary folks.
