Happy Trail
by Daisy Prescott
Sloooooow burn with forced proximity in an old moonshiner's cabin just off the Appalachian Trail.
Another new-to-me author thanks to Smartypants Romance and the 3rd book I've read in the Pennyverse, all 3 of which are slow burns so it begs the question whether this is a attributed to the authors and their styles, or if this is something inherent to Smartypants Romance....
This was a pleasant read - the hero, Jay, is half Japanese/white but passes as white with his green eyes and brown hair while his sister looks more Japanese and his feeling of otherness and not quite fitting in to either of his cultures was interesting because he saw and felt the difference in how people treated him vs. his sister....the obvious racism his mother and sister experienced as visible minorities living in the south and how he internalizes it and engages defensively whenever he meets someone new is exceptional. He thinks it's a big deal and puts off telling Olive until the last minute but when she finds out that he's mixed, she just kind of shrugs - and that's probably her big city privilege of being around people from different cultural backgrounds.
