Calling on Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

4.0

Eeeeeh. Definitely not my favorite of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. While the first two books followed a fairly well-established series of events, the entire point of this book seems to be throwing out random events to shake things up. Particularly, the running gag of the rabbit Killer eating things and changing around his enchantments. Or being warned not to eat things, but then ignoring the warning and changing his enchantments. Kind of over-done.

This book is mainly a set-up for the final book in the series, and it shows. It's just not as entertaining as the previous two, where we actually got to know the characters and hear quite a lot of amusing bickering. This book just feels like the author is trying to get Cimorene away from the castle, so Mendabar can be trapped.

It's a return to the Enchanted Forest, but it's not quite the Forest that we love. Just...a forest. So it's okay for a continuing fan, but I'd say definitely not a good start if you happen to randomly pick up the book.
