My Policeman by Bethan Roberts

After reading this book, I found that I wanted to keep it with me for a little while. I kept opening it up on random pages and just reliving moments and reflecting on them. Having learnt that it’s based loosely on true events was both good and saddening to know. I think it’s so important to be able to honour your truth and live that truth with love for yourself and others, done so with respect and not having to deny yourself the happiness and companionship that we all deserve.

I experienced a mix of emotions whilst reading this book relating to all the characters and how they treated themselves and each other. It saddens me how society was and still is in so many ways repressive and unaccepting of peoples preferences and choices. Why can’t we all be happy. As long as we are doing no harm to others, we can live our truth. I’m sure the world would be a far happier place.

I found Marion to be a little dull, somewhat monotone in her behaviour and personality, however, I’m sure if she allowed herself the space to find someone, who genuinely loved her and wanted to spend the rest of their life with her, she could have been so much happier and content. I really wanted that for her! I’d say she did not feel worthy. All round, this book had difficult situations and emotions to be dealt with, for all the characters, in such a time where society was not accepting of any relationships, other than heterosexual. It stirred multiple emotions in me, relating to a variety of situations and conversations had. I had empathy for all the characters on one level or another and also felt frustrated by certain choices made. Expressions of the human experience.
