this was really great. the only thing keeping it from being 5 stars is that it's 150 pages too long.
so many good passages - about Portland in 1999, Portland in 2009; about the irritating consumer/history paradox of Pride; about the difference between a Nebraska 39 (They were consumers, savers, caretakers, voters) and Portland 39 (bass player, smoker, lover, no one's parent, no one's partner...a protagonist...wise and not wise); about motherhood; about the feeling of an old cat climbing onto your chest and settling in. also fun to have read half of it in actual portland!
