I found the premise at the start of the book, interesting and realistic. The close knit Italian immigrant family and the small town Irish family also felt familiar
What was surprising was like other reviews, I found aspects of all the main characters unpleasant, which didn’t mean I disliked the book, far from it. Toibin highlights what cowards and weaklings we an be when confronted with scenarios depicted in this book. I found myself sympathetic to the characters, yet angry at them for not being stronger
To be able to invoke these feelings alone is enough to congratulate the author
