Doing Harm: The Truth about How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick by Maya Dusenbery

5.0

This book was both incredible and horrifying. It tracks how the lack of knowledge of women’s health issues due to lack of studies as well as the lack of belief doctors are willing to give women patients cause us to struggle so much with the health system. Who among us hasn’t gotten dismissive and sexist statements from doctors?

I’ve been remarkably lucky in my health, but have had a doctor ask me how a “pretty little thing” like me could have gotten injured when I had a broken toe (he finally gave me a referral for an X-ray but kept insisting I was fine - turned out it was a serious break and I should stay off of it). Also, having a fantastic doctor now has made me realize how dismissive and shitty my past doctors were.

Feel free to share your rage filled doctor stories with me, talking about them with each other is how we recognize the systemic issues and get the courage to keep pressing for answers.
