donna 's review for:
The Vagrant
by Peter Newman
You know when you read a book, and you can tell objectively that it's really well written, but it's just not doing anything for you? The Vagrant started off like that for me. It's written in the present tense, which is something I find difficult to read anyway, and then the main character doesn't speak. At all. I really struggled with it for about the first half of the book and I was considering giving up on it. Fortunately, something clicked at that point and I found the second half much easier to read. By the end of the book I properly cared about the characters, and I want to know what happens next. I'm glad I persevered, although reading it as a bedtime book has resulted in some very strange dreams and broken sleep this week!
